Using a System Dynamics Simulation Model to Identify Leverage Points for Reducing Youth Homelessness in Connecticut

Youth homelessness is a significant problem in most United States communities. Health problems are both contributor to and consequence of homelessness. Responses youth typically fragmentary. Different agencies deal with various causes consequences the problem. Stakeholders Connecticut sought more coherent approach. This article describes development use system dynamics simulation model as decision-support tool that: (1) brings stakeholders together from diverse service sectors allows them see whole, (2) enables explore how delivery systems interact affect homeless unstably housed youth, (3) lets test impact different intervention alternatives on reducing problem, (4) helps develop insights about approaches The model’s described phased process including stakeholder engagement, causal mapping, creation quantitative model. resulting presented along an interface that Learning Lab setting.
